BOTOX® is one of the most well-known names when it comes to injectable wrinkle treatments. When used to treat fine lines and wrinkles in the facial area, BOTOX® has been proven to be both safe and effective.
What It Does
BOTOX® injections block the chemical signals that cause muscle contraction, thus relaxing the underlying muscles that cause wrinkles. Common areas of treatment include crow’s feet around the eyes, frown lines in between eyebrows and the often deep horizontal lines of the forehead that occur when eyebrows are raised.
BOTOX® has proven to be quite safe; however, there are possible risks associated with the treatment. Common side effects are mild and can include headaches and bruising at the site of injection.
What to Expect
You’ll have a consultation to share your medical history and to learn about the procedure. Also, it’s important to know if you are taking any blood thinners, muscle relaxants, allergy medications or sleep aids.
Some patients don’t require any pain relief, but it is available if you feel you would benefit. Prescription numbing cream, injections or a cold spray to provide a numbing sensation are all available options.
During the procedure, your physician will use a very thin needle to inject the BOTOX® medicine into your skin. Only a small amount of medicine is used. The number of injections you’ll require all depends on the size of the area to be treated and the severity of the wrinkles.
After the Treatment
You can return to your normal, everyday routine immediately following the procedure. Just be careful not to massage or rub the areas that were treated. You should begin to notice results within a few days.
Results can typically last from about three months to one year, depending on your specific treatment needs. Follow-up BOTOX® injections may be needed to maintain the effects.
