Remember that “baby fat” you hated so much in high school? You’d stare in the mirror and curse your chubby cheeks endlessly. But now that you’re a few years older, you might have noticed that with the loss of that fat has come a series of wrinkles.
As you age, the loss of subcutaneous fat leads to sagging skin, but thanks to medical advances, there are a variety of dermal fillers available to help fill in those spaces for a more youthful appearance. Dermal fillers can fill in lines and wrinkles in less than 30 minutes and give you results that last for upwards of a year.
At Transformations Plastic Surgery in Rockford, IL, Dr. Landon Pryor can help you fill those lines and wrinkles with dermal filler injections. These non-invasive treatments can take years off your appearance in less than an hour, and they’re done right here in our office. Hyaluronic Acid Fillers
This is the most popular type of wrinkle filler on the market today. Because hyaluronic acid is found naturally in the body, it’s considered a more “natural” approach to wrinkle filling with less potential for side effects. When it’s injected under the skin, it acts as a sort of cushion to areas that have lost elasticity or volume because of aging. It also draws water to the surface of the skin so it appears supple and fresh.
Results typically last several months, although some people see them last for over a year. Research has indicated that frequent injections can help the body create its own collagen, reducing the amount of lines and wrinkles over time with fewer injections.
The very first wrinkle filler ever made was from collagen extracted from cows. It worked well enough but the results faded quickly, often breaking down within a month of injection. Science has made it possible to create synthetic collagens that produce fewer side effects and longer lasting results.
Collagen is responsible for keeping your skin smooth and tight. As you age, your body stops producing as much collagen, meaning your skin gets softer, saggy and less elastic. These fillers make up for your body’s lack of collagen production and help restore your skin back to its lifted, youthful appearance. Side effects are minimal, although they’re more common when the collagen is sourced from cows.
Autologous Wrinkle Fillers
This type of dermal filler uses your own fat. Doctors will remove fat from your thighs, stomach, or buttocks, and then it will be injected into the desired area. Two procedures are required (to remove the fat and then inject it), but they can often be done in one visit. Your fat has to be treated before it can be injected, but after a couple of injections, the results are generally permanent. Another kind of filler are known as “vampire lifts” use platelet-rich plasma that’s injected into the face. Results for the vampire lifts can last up to 18 months.
Aging isn’t avoidable, but the effects it has on your skin are treatable. If your cheeks are drooping, you have lines around your eyes, or you just feel like your face could use a lift without a surgical procedure, then dermal fillers could be just what you’ve been looking for. A few visits to your plastic surgeon – like Dr. Pryor – during your lunch break are all that’s between you to a more youthful look.
